2006 Season Review

On the surface, it would appear that things were all bad for a baseball team that finished its season 2-18.  But dig a little deeper into the offensive numbers generated by the Spartans.

Ryan Follendorf (N. Tonawanda, NY/N. Tonawanda) emerged as a Second-Team All-Conference recipient.  The junior centerfielder posted his best season at the plate batting .366.  Follendorf hit safely in 16 of the team’s 20 games, and posted nine multi-hit games.

There were a number of late-season performances that indicate the Spartans are on the right course. Sean Collins (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois) hit a team-best a team best .465 with runners in scoring position, and closed the season going six for eleven (.545).  Nick Wahl (Holland, NY/Holland) closed the campaign going 4-11 (.364) with two home runs.  Mike Doyle (Buffalo, NY/Timon-St. Jude) hit .600 with a home run in the team’s final two games. On the mound, Brian Monk (Union-Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) struck out 14 batters in his last 14 innings pitched, and Collins fanned 13 in his final 14 innings.

The overall record wasn’t helped by the late season cancellation of doubleheaders versus Polytechnic, SUNY Purchase and Medaille.  The three cancelled opponents combined for an overall record of 30 games below  .500.

Despite some setbacks, second-year coach Jeff Helmbrecht is optimistic, “We did some good things at times, and we have some players coming in next season that will help us.

How close are the Spartans to turning it around? The team’s lone conference win came against Cazenovia, one of the four teams that qualified for the NEAC Tournament.  D’Youville also had a two-run loss at Keuka, another NEAC Tourney qualifier, and a one-run loss at fifth-place finisher Philadelphia Biblical University.
